[Fontaine: The technological hub of Teyvat.
For as long as anyone can remember, the country of Fontaine has always been the innovative center for the continent. High speed rail was originated here, and now spans across the entirety of Teyvat and beyond. High rises and skyscrapers pepper the skyline, modern Victorian buildings supporting a gear-like aesthetic from an era gone by. A thousand years ago, it was a much different place, but now it thrives with the bright lights and bustle of its people. One can hear the occasional street performer playing for cash, as businessmen and tourists alike walk down narrow cobblestone streets. People are buried in their phones, some take pictures as they gawk at the sights of the city, but one young man in particular walks languidly down the street, enjoying the life around him. He's in no hurry to get where he's going, as he has plenty of time to get there, noting a deli across the street from where he is now that he'll have to try.
Unfortunately, he is on business, so that'll have to wait.
Never being one to be dressed completely formal, he wears a comfortable pair of slacks and dress shoes, with a collared shirt that isn't buttoned up all the way under a grey vest. Various pieces of metal are woven into the vest, notably a crest on his right shoulder with a chain attached to it that hangs under his arm to the back. On his belt lies a Vision, glowing blue with hydro. The young man always seems friendly and easy going, but what lies underneath is something that not many are allowed to know- the heir to the family business of a company who develops tech for various products is also the right hand man of the mafia that runs the city.
And, their true business behind the scenes; creating Delusions to sell on the black market.
Today is a day where some investigating has to be done, and he's headed to see an old friend of his, from university. One that he's sure can help him with this problem he has. Entering the building, he swings in quietly to give a polite wave and a smile to the only person there.
Someone who looked exactly like their brother, whom he can only assume is the twin sister he'd yet to meet that he'd heard about.]
Hello, I was wondering if Aether was in today? I had a...business proposal for him, and I'm sure that he'd love to hear it. Unless of course, you might be of assistance instead.

Hello, I was wondering if Aether was in today? I had a...business proposal for him, and I'm sure that he'd love to hear it. Unless of course, you might be of assistance instead.
no subject
[He stands up, knowing that her schedule wouldn't allow too much more time for her to rest.]
Business aside, it was a pleasure to finally get to meet you after all this time. I remember Aether speaking of his twin sister very now and again, though I never thought I'd get the chance to meet you. Perhaps once all this is said and done, we could do this again? It would be lovely if Aether could join us as well, of course.
no subject
You're welcome. It's nice to meet a friend of my brother's as well.
[ there's that part of her that wishes to say more, but she bites her tongue and just sends him another smile. ]
I'll see you tomorrow.
[ with that, she walks out of the shop, heels clicking against the linoleum floor, pausing only to dispose of the wrapper and coffee cup into the bin. a message is sent quickly to aether afterward as she's walking back to their building, letting him know of a request one of his friends is asking for. the moment she drops ajax volkov's name, her phone rings.
really, hilarious how that name suddenly summons her errant twin. ]
no subject
I'm being ridiculous, he tells himself. He has things to do and people to take care of. Does he really have time to be worrying about this? Especially when it makes no sense.
And yet.
He exits the shop, looking down the road to see if he can catch a glimpse of her before she disappears, but it seems like she's already gone. No matter, he'd see her the next day anyhow. Turning in the opposite direction, he heads back to their offices, his mind distracted by Lumine the entire way back.
The next day, he shows up fifteen minutes early back at Aether and Lumine's office. Not much has changed about his appearance, still sporting slacks and nice comfortable dress shoes, a different colored button up shirt tucked in with the sleeves rolled up. No vest today, he figured this should be a bit more casual, considering he was expecting to meet with Aether today as well. He walks up to the receptionist desk, greeting the woman from the day before.]
Hi, Sophie, right? I'm here for my appointment at five.
no subject
if she had known there would be a hitch to today's schedule, she would've gone in place of aether. that way, he would've met with ajax instead and discussed his request together.
she fiddles with the blue ribbon on her chest, leaning back in her seat behind the oak desk, staring blankly at the painting albedo gifted her years ago. her brother remains on her ear, grumbling at how this is taking so long and he just wants to return to the office. ]
This is why I told you not to keep pushing it until past lunchtime.
[ she winces when aether whines in response, another sigh leaving her lips in its wake. ]
Well, just stay on the line, okay? Sophie said he's on his way, and— [ lumine pauses and looks up at the door when she hears a knock, her secretary peering in to announce her guest. she waves a hand to let him in, sitting up straight when she hears the door open again. ] You have to be the one to tell him, so stay, Aether.
no subject
Is this a bad time? [He says, glancing at the phone up to her ear.] Do I need to come back later?
no subject
No, stay. Give me a sec.
[ she turns back to the phone, her expression turning annoyed. ]
He's already here. I am not doing this for you again, Ae. You said—
[ there's a long pause on her end, the look on her face shifting from irritation to disbelief to helplessness. a moment later, she's sighing heavily once more. really, if she were given a single mora for every sigh she's exhaled over her brother, she'd be richer than the biggest business moguls in fontaine or liyue.
there's a quiet mutter of fine before she gets up from her seat and walks over to the sofa, her short black skirt swishing from the movement, offering her phone to ajax. ]
Aether apologises for not being around again today, but he'd like to speak to you anyway regarding your request. He's decided to accept it, but as a personal project rather than a formal contract with the company. So, if you're okay with waiting for him to come back ...
no subject
Heeeey, Aether, it's been a while. .... Yes, about that... ... right. Lumine's already said you'd take it as a personal project. ... Okay. ... Of course, half of it is here already.
.....
Come now, you know I wouldn't... .... I promise. .... Aether, when have I ever broken a promise? .... okay, okay. Listen, I'll take care of it personally. You have my word. ... Yes. ... Haha, it's good to hear from you too. .... I've already asked if ... haha, yeah. Maybe I'll get an answer to that soon. I think it would be a lot of fun. ... Alright. Thanks again. I'll wait for you here so I can give you the information you need. ... See you soon then.
[He hangs up, handing the phone back to Lumine.]
Well, it seems that everything is set up, save for one last thing. I guess I will be staying after all. You don't mind, do you?
no subject
if that's not suspicious, then lumine doesn't know what else is. but she knows better than to insist, aether clamming up more if she tries to push him for more details. she only hopes this doesn't end up dangerous for her twin.
when the call ends, she simply takes the phone and walks back to her desk. her brother could've at least spoken with her one more time, but nope. ]
You can stay here if you'd like. [ and have someone bring in coffee or sandwiches or whatever. ] Or if you'd prefer to wait elsewhere instead, I'll have someone contact you when Aether arrives.
no subject
[Aether asked him enough questions too. Ajax is sure he'll need more reassurances here, and he can't blame him, given the purpose of the job. The young man would prefer to keep any sights on himself low, and if that means sitting in here for another hour? Fine by him.]
Will you be staying? It is getting quite late. Don't let me be the reason to hold you up here.
[He says that, to be polite. But he hopes she will stay, if only for the chance to talk to her more. That same nagging feeling comes back, like she's someone he's known for longer than a day, and if he asked the right question maybe he'd figure out why.]
no subject
though she could probably take them home, work on them in her study. but still, there's a part of her that doesn't want to leave just yet. ]
Mm, I have a few things to work on anyway. And I need to speak to Aether as well.
[ she tugs a folder marked with a blue post-it scribbled with her name on it towards her, scanning the contents. paperwork that needs her signature, project proposals that need her review, also other administrative tasks that land on her desk.
lumine then reaches out for the phone and asks for her secretary to bring in coffee and snacks for their guest. ]
Make yourself at home until my brother arrives.
no subject
[He's on a couch, so he slips his shoes off, revealing black socks, and lays across it, his back propped up on the arm behind him. He slips his phone out of his pocket, and starts messing around on it like any other person would. The phone case isn't a spectacular one, but there's a tiny little narwhal charm that hangs from it, dangling from the top as he sends a few texts before turning the phone sideways as he waits for something to load on it.]
If Aether is too long, I can order us something more substantial than coffee and a few snacks for us, just in case. It's almost dinner as it is.
[He starts tapping on his phone, until he looks satisfied and puts it down. Whatever game he has running is auto playing itself.]
no subject
she sighs under her breath, returning to her paperwork and only looking up when their coffee arrives. she thanks her secretary with a small smile, taking a quick sip of the sweetened drink, and watches as she leaves the tray on the coffee table in front of ajax. ]
Just let me know what food you'd like to have and I'll get someone to buy it for us. Aether will pay for it.
[ because he honestly doesn't need to deal with this if only her brother were around to entertain him. ]
Since you're his guest, after all.
no subject
Though I'm not too particular about what I eat, I'm in the mood for something right now. Here.
[He swings his legs off the couch, getting up to hand his phone to her. He's got a delivery app up, with a local hole in the wall seafood joint that he likes.]
How do you like seafood? This place is pretty good and their food always gets delivered fresh. It's not as good as the stuff I can make, but it's delicious nonetheless. And it's a bit far, so I wouldn't want to ask your secretary down there to run and get it for us.
no subject
but before she can even protest, he's already handing his phone over to her, an app for a seafood restaurant opened for her to peruse. everything he's said is also a jumble of words in her head. ]
Er ...
[ she's not very picky with her food, either, and lumine scrolls through the app, brows furrowing at the selection. a moment later, however, she's handing the phone back to him. ]
... And here I thought you're the type who likes to look at their own picture. [ because that sure isn't his face on the front of his phone, but three little kids, all grinning widely. how cute ... and familiar. ] Sorry, but the app crashed, I think. And I didn't want to go through your stuff.
no subject
[He takes the phone back, opening the app again and having to scroll through one more time to find the restaurant he'd chosen. Handing it back to her, he just smiles as he continues on, his eyes crinkling at their corners with happiness when he starts talking about his siblings.]
Those are my siblings, Tonia, Anthon, and Teucer. They're great kids, I'm very proud of them.
[His hand goes up to rub his temple. Ajax's eyes close for a moment, trying to make sense of that sensation just now. A flash of gold, red, brown and green, inside of a bank that looked like it could be in Liyue...and two figures in front of him...]
Anyway, I'm hurt that you'd think I was so conceited. [He doesn't sound hurt at all, if anything now he's just giving her a little friendly guff for her assumption.] But I'll forgive you, just this once.
no subject
lumine too briefly closes her eyes when that similar pain from yesterday lances through her head, brief flashes of familiar architecture from liyue seemingly passing through like memories being rifled. she wonders if it's because she hasn't rested well lately, her dreams vivid and her sleep restless. ]
You were the one using that kicked puppy look on me yesterday.
[ now that she's started calling him out ... ]
I'm good with shrimp tacos. [ and she starts reaching into her purse for her wallet. ] And I'm happy to go dutch if you are.
no subject
[He adds the shrimp tacos for her, and adds his own food. A few drinks and another side are added as well, before he places the order and slides his phone back into his pocket.]
But don't worry about the money. I get points for using my app anyway. Besides, I'm the one who suggested it, I wasn't going to make you pay for something I practically asked for. I just hope you like it, is all.
[He decides to forgo the couch, grabbing the empty chair and sitting in that instead. The game on his phone forgotten, he's finding that he'd rather talk to her instead.]
So, tell me about yourself a little. What do you like to do for fun after the stiff workday is over?
no subject
You can sell anything to Aether, and he'll buy it if you have a good sob story, you know.
[ not that he makes it easy for her, pulling up a chair and sitting across her instead. if only her brother were here, then she wouldn't be dealing with this right now. but seeing that she won't exactly be able to work with him around ...
lumine sets her pen down, looking back up at him. ]
I like to go home, read a book and then sleep. [ is she boring? please think she's a boring person. ] I sometimes go out with friends to drink, but nothing else really ... exciting.
no subject
She picked a terrible hobby to choose to sway him away.]
Who doesn't like to drink? [He's kidding, he knows plenty of people, but.]
What kind of books? I'm quite partial to fantasy adventure type books myself, though I do enjoy most other genres. I don't get to read quite as much as I used to when I was younger, but an audio book from time to time while I'm working is nice.
no subject
besides, if she had known that this wouldn't dissuade him, then she would've picked something more boring. like taking walks on the beach or gardening. no one likes gardening, right? ]
I like different kinds. [ fairy tales, history books, non-fiction and fiction—she even remembers picking up a light novel while she was in inazuma for a brief period of time. ] I don't really have a favourite genre, to be honest.
[ a beat: ] So that's your hobby, too? Reading?
no subject
[But since she's asked, now he'll tell her about his real favorite hobby.]
I personally enjoy martial arts and training with as many weapons as possible. It's fun, and if I'm being honest, it's helpful when living in a big city like this. I don't ever worry about getting jumped, and for fear of sounding like a little kid with too bright of eyes, I've always been fascinated by it. Can't tell you why, I just always have.
[He's tempted to show her, but that would be weird, he thinks. She'd probably take it the wrong way too, and he wouldn't blame her. Some guy she barely knows, showing her how his Vision works? If she called the cops, she'd be well within her right.]
no subject
and really, would aether stay friends with someone who has a criminal background? ]
Are you sure you're not a serial killer?
[ she's kidding, but hey, a number of serial killers have a fascination over weapons and knives, right? so who knows. ]
no subject
It kind of seems that way, doesn't it? Hahahaha-! [He has to catch his breath for a second, before continuing.]
No, no, I'm afraid not, no matter how many books you've read that might tell you otherwise.
[People watch a lot of TV, movies and stuff okay.]
I just think fighting is a lot of fun, that's all. Haven't you ever tried it?
no subject
she wrinkles her nose at his laughter. archons, she hates how it sounds, not because it's annoying but because it strikes something unknown inside of her. ]
Why would I try it? Fighting with my brother is exhausting as it is.
[ if she wanted to get tired and her body to hurt, she'd go to the gym. that's perhaps the closest thing she could do to fighting: fighting against her own body. ]
I think I'll stick to reading, thanks.
no subject
[His laughter finally subsides, looking wholly amused at the whole conversation. Even her face. That expression that is so familiar, like he's asked for a spar and she's denied him a fight before. It strikes him for a moment, perhaps staring back into her golden eyes a bit too long before he shakes that feeling off.]
I suppose it's not for everyone. Too bad, I could teach you how to subdue someone without barely lifting a finger. Though those aren't nearly as fun to fight. But anyway, since that doesn't seem to be your favorite topic, let's move on, shall we? Surely going home and just reading until you fall asleep isn't the only thing you do. Everyone's got at least a few hobbies.
[He smiles again, see? He's not just a battle junkie. Even if he is just a battle junkie.]
For instance, I rather enjoy fishing too. Tell me you don't mind going out and exploring the great outdoors, at least.
