[Fontaine: The technological hub of Teyvat.
For as long as anyone can remember, the country of Fontaine has always been the innovative center for the continent. High speed rail was originated here, and now spans across the entirety of Teyvat and beyond. High rises and skyscrapers pepper the skyline, modern Victorian buildings supporting a gear-like aesthetic from an era gone by. A thousand years ago, it was a much different place, but now it thrives with the bright lights and bustle of its people. One can hear the occasional street performer playing for cash, as businessmen and tourists alike walk down narrow cobblestone streets. People are buried in their phones, some take pictures as they gawk at the sights of the city, but one young man in particular walks languidly down the street, enjoying the life around him. He's in no hurry to get where he's going, as he has plenty of time to get there, noting a deli across the street from where he is now that he'll have to try.
Unfortunately, he is on business, so that'll have to wait.
Never being one to be dressed completely formal, he wears a comfortable pair of slacks and dress shoes, with a collared shirt that isn't buttoned up all the way under a grey vest. Various pieces of metal are woven into the vest, notably a crest on his right shoulder with a chain attached to it that hangs under his arm to the back. On his belt lies a Vision, glowing blue with hydro. The young man always seems friendly and easy going, but what lies underneath is something that not many are allowed to know- the heir to the family business of a company who develops tech for various products is also the right hand man of the mafia that runs the city.
And, their true business behind the scenes; creating Delusions to sell on the black market.
Today is a day where some investigating has to be done, and he's headed to see an old friend of his, from university. One that he's sure can help him with this problem he has. Entering the building, he swings in quietly to give a polite wave and a smile to the only person there.
Someone who looked exactly like their brother, whom he can only assume is the twin sister he'd yet to meet that he'd heard about.]

Hello, I was wondering if Aether was in today? I had a...business proposal for him, and I'm sure that he'd love to hear it. Unless of course, you might be of assistance instead.

Childe told her to seek him out. He was right to do so, he's a close friend of both of them. No doubt that Mr. Zhongli's knowledge will help us in the long run. I'm glad he's here, I just wish I had a moment to get to talk to him myself, outside of the brief time when he first arrived.
[Though he isn't looking forward to the endless rambles about random topics that he really didn't care for- that's just how the guy is. Ajax breathes sharply out of his nose at the memory from Childe's past, remembering how the Harbinger had always come to rest his head on his fist during such get togethers.]
Why do you ask? It doesn't bother you, does it?
[A jab for a jab, as far as he's concerned. Aether can freak out about Lumine dating another guy, even though Ajax knows that isn't why the man is here.]
no subject
should it? he seems like an upstanding guy and lumi's been looking happy for the past week or so whenever she sees him.
a jab for a jab for a jab. no offence, ajax, but with how things are developing on a daily basis, aether has every right to throw that back at him like a pie to his face. he's also getting a little exhausted of lumine's dance around any topic that relates to ajax, her upset visible on her expression despite the impassive look that settles on her face, so much so that he wonders if they're over.
ajax, for one, also isn't acknowledging her, so he assumes as much. can't really say that he didn't warn him. ]
Aether! Come join us. Zhongli would like to meet you.
[ i'm sure you already know how stubborn lumine is. aether keeps his gaze trained outside the window even as he gets back up to his feet, ready to meet his twin sister and the man she's been spending time with. ngl, he is pretty curious about this guy.
if you're waiting for her to make the first move, you'll be waiting until your hair has turned white. i'm not saying she's in the right, but i'm saying that once she's put her mind to doing something, then nothing will be able to stop her, not even me or your soulmate destiny thing. just make sure you don't regret anything.
lumine's smile widens when aether meets them up outside the house, introducing him to the former geo archon and inviting him to tea with the both of them. after all, there's much for them to talk about, especially given the information that zhongli's so far provided her. she excuses herself for a bit, however, to prepare the tea in the kitchen, leaving the two to talk amongst themselves in the garden. ]
no subject
But the conversation has left him starting to brood, sighing after ten minutes or so and getting up to go downstairs. He pads lightly down the stairs, passing the kitchen without giving it a look at all as he heads outside. The swirling rush of leaving the teapot encompasses his vision until he finds himself in the apartment once more, heading towards the couch to sit down and check his notifications on his phone and any emails and calls he may of gotten.
It takes about half an hour or so to go through it all, reading through various boring emails and text messages about work at the tech company and about delusion sales. Eventually, he ends up on his discover browser, scrolling down through headlines of online articles until one particular picture and headline catches his eye.
Ajax is up off the couch so quickly, one would think he was never there at all- and he heads back into the teapot, circling around the back to the garden with his eyes wide open with anger and horror.]
They hit your office.
[Is all he says as he brings his phone over, the webpage still loaded to hand it to whatever twin takes it from him.]
They're setting you both up to walk into a trap. I'm willing to bet they can't find us, so they're trying to lure us out.
no subject
lumine!
miss lumine—
almost immediately, lumine's on the move, sprinting out of the garden and allowing herself to return to the apartment, the teapot dissolving all around her. it's only when her feet are back on carpeted floor that her phone starts chiming, messages of panic, distress and confusion from various employees pouring into her phone. without a second thought, she starts calling everyone she knows at the office, starting with her assistant. ]
Claire?
[ there's a surprised gasp from her assistant, followed by a cry of relief at the sound of her voice. lumine paces in the apartment, already expecting the worst possible outcome. ]
Tell me what's happened.
no subject
Stay here, [he says to both Aether and Zhongli,] and make sure that this teapot doesn't get destroyed. I'm going after her, she's going to get herself killed.
[He takes off running, irritated that he knows she's going to take the bait again, hook line and sinker. The scenery of the teapot swirls around him, until he finds himself in the apartment once more.]
Lumine?
[He calls out for her, but she's no where to be found- already left to get down to the office. He's sure there would be police there, but there's always a back way in, and he knows that she'll take it. He'll make sure to find it too.
Thankfully, enough time has passed for his body to heal, and he forgoes getting his car to drive downtown by using his vision to move. Ajax knows he must look like a madman, hydroplaning down streets as fast as he can as people gawk at the rare person who'd been gifted a vision. He doesn't see her anywhere as he travels, wondering how she'd moved so quickly. Or maybe he'd passed her and not known it.
But he finally arrives, and it's exactly what he suspected. Police crawling everywhere, police tape up so he can't get near it. Ajax rounds to the back, hoping to be able to slip in somewhere, or find something that'll give him a clue, since they do like to use unconventional entrances, it seems...]
no subject
she can't be caught here; after all, she'd just been questioned by them a few weeks ago over aether's disappearance. the fact that this happened after that incident will make turn her into a prime suspect somehow.
in any case, she finds one of the stairwells at the back of the building, recalling it as one of the spots where some of the guys used to smoke before they set up a designated smoking area, and slips inside. despite the crowd outside, it's deathly silent inside the office and lumine races up the staircase, eventually finding herself halfway through the building.
she pads through the empty hallways, glancing around to see if anyone is left. claire told her that the building has been evacuated, but there are still others who might be left inside. what catches her eye, however, is the sight of the garden on the same floor, greenery built on a balcony as some sort of personal park for the employees.
her eyes narrow, before she walks over, pushing the glass door to the outside. nothing seems to be out of place, except for a dark patch of something along the bushes. the moment lumine sees it, she knows what it is. ]
Blood ...
[ she follows the trail, ending at the stone ledge of the balcony railing, and stares at the empty building right across it. a moment later, she's climbing up the railing, peering over the edge. it's a long fall down if she makes one wrong move. ]
no subject
Ajax finally manages to find the same garden on the balcony, making his way over to it and opening the glass door and seeing the same trail of blood, leading to a girl who's preparing to climb over the edge of the railing where the blood leads to. With a hiss, he calls out to her, narrowing his eyes. How does she expect to get down from there without hurting herself?]
Lumine-!
[Ajax runs over to the railing, looking around quickly as he joins her at her side. Breathing heavily from all the running he's done, he gives her a tired and frustrated look.]
Wait up a second! Don't rush into this, you're asking to get killed!
no subject
I've done this before.
[ not from this height, but she's pretty sure she can jump that distance. at the very least, she's wearing ballet flats and not heels, having come from the teapot. better if she wore sneakers, but it's not like she was expecting this situation.
she gives it a beat, before lumine glances at him over her shoulder, finally swinging herself up the railing, prepared to leap off. ]
You don't have to follow and get injured again. I'll be fine.
no subject
[He insists, narrowing his eyes at her. He's been in enough situations dealing with the shady dealing of his family's business to know when they're being set up. And this is what this clearly is, though he's unsure if the route they're taking will give them the element of surprise or not. It's not a very obvious way to get to where they need to go.]
Let me remind you that you don't have a very good track record of this so far. And I'm not going let you throw your life away.
[He folds his arms over his chest, seeing figures pass by windows as well in the other building. Hopefully they haven't been detected yet.]
I don't know what you hope to accomplish while you're here, but since you're going anyway, I'd also like to get my hands on some of the people who continue to hunt us. So don't try and stop me from tagging along.
no subject
still, without another word or even waiting for him to finish talking, lumine swallows her heart and jumps off of railing, pitching herself towards the other building's ledge. one mistake, one slip and she's falling ten stories down, probably fulfilling the demands of the gods—and she almost does, her foot slipping off of the edge the moment she lands.
she only manages to save herself when her hand grab a jutting part of the wall, her fingers and nails scrabbling against the concrete and eventually pulling herself upright.
once she's found her footing, lumine quickly slips through the doorway and into the darkness of the building. ]
no subject
Water encases him as he uses his own power to propel him over to the ledge, following Lumine into the doorway of the building to chase after her footfalls. He catches up to her, keeping his wits about him as he listens for other people inside the building. It doesn't seem like this building is used, making much more sense now since police would have discovered anyone in their office.]
Hey, [he whispers,] at least tell me what you know. You tried calling some of your employees, right?
[Ajax sneaks a peak down the hallway to their right, leading to more empty rooms. No one seems to be roaming the hallway at the moment, and he can hear people speaking, but can't make out the words. How lucky they were to be on the right floor, it seems, but he knows there's at least a few people here they'll need to take out.
Now, he wishes he'd grabbed his guns before he left. But they both have their elemental power, so that will have to do for now.]
no subject
lumine tries to focus on the voices, fighting the urge to push his face away as she peers down the hallway from behind a wall. but again, not the time. ]
Claire said a group of men suddenly showed up after the explosions in the server room. They tried to go into my and Aether's office but a few of the guys tried to fight them off ...
[ but they were taken, claire tearfully told her, easily outmatched. she tries not to imagine the worst, but lumine can't help it, her chest tightening. ]
... I have to help them.
no subject
Okay. We should be able to get them out unharmed, but hear me out. We've dealt with the Dufonts before in this capacity, and they have a penchant for laying out a trap for the ones they're trying to ensnare. It's sort of their MO.
[He doesn't feel the need to remind her about how she'd been captured at the warehouse- she probably fell right into said trap.]
So we need to stick together and watch each other's backs. They're going to want to get the jump on us, and we can't let that happen. They've got a lot more power now- and who knows what kind of strange magic they wield. Plus, there could always be another god waiting for us.
[His voice lowers, anger lining it. He blames Celestia for all this, if it weren't for them, the worst thing Lumine and himself would have to worry about would have been figuring out their strange shared visions.]
But in the meantime, let's get the jump on them instead. A surprise attack coming at them right through their front door sounds more than satisfying. All we'll have to do is make sure we take care of any one before they can shoot us or raise the alarm. Follow me.
[Ajax moves, sneaking quietly down the hall towards a room that he can clearly hear voices coming out from behind the door. He holds up his hand, trying to gauge how many people are in there and if the hostages are in there nor not. He can hear laughter and a soft thud of someone hitting someone else, presumably one of Lumine's employees getting socked in the stomach.
He nods to her, ready to open the door to take out the goons inside. The moment she gives the okay, he opens the door to go in and take care of business.]
no subject
... also, only he would say that going through the front door as a sneak attack would be satisfying. really, how much of childe is already a part of him?
before she nods at him though, she suddenly lifts up her skirt, her hand dropping to the leather holster around her thigh and taking out her gun. she offers it to ajax, a flat look on her face. a moment later, she's smoothing down her dress once more. ]
Only because you don't look prepared.
no subject
Thanks. I didn't have time to grab mine.
[And with that, he opens the door. It's sudden and fast, interrupting the fun the goons inside were having with their hostages. Turns out he was right, there they were, tied to chairs like some kind of bad cop movie. Ajax wastes no time, dispatching one of them on the right hand side of the room as he moves quickly to them, a hydro blade across his throat before turning and throwing his other blade right into the chest of another before he even has a chance to take his gun out.
One if left for Lumine to take out, but Ajax is surprised that it was only the three in there. Seems her employees are beat up, but fine- is that really all there is in here?]
Something's not right.
[He can sense it, as if a shadow of dread suddenly loomed over them both.]
Be on your guard. No doubt there will be more to deal with on our way out.
no subject
one of them is passed out, but the other is still conscious, staring at her wide-eyed with relief. she quickly cuts off his bonds, giving him a gentle pat on the shoulder and gestures at the other guy in the room. ]
Take him and leave. You guys need to get out of here and go somewhere safe. I'll have someone contact you and your family later.
[ to make up for it, to make sure they're protected. they're not supposed to be here, after all. they're not supposed to have been put in danger.
they took two more of us to a different room. we don't know where they are.
lumine's gaze flickers at ajax, sensing his unease, before she turns back to her guys, giving the other a slight nod and urging them to leave. once they're gone, she surveys the room, completely empty save for the ones they just took out. ]
We need to find the others.
no subject
He nods to Lumine, peeking back out into the hallway. He doesn't hear anything, meaning their intrusion into the room was successful in not alerting anyone else to their presence, but that might not last long. Office workers don't exactly know the meaning of stealth, and if they're loud enough, there will be more goons showing up soon.]
If it were me, I'd go even higher up to keep the others. It's harder to escape the higher you go up, but that won't be a problem for us.
[Inclining his head, he gestures to go. There's not much time to waste, if they were going to keep their element of surprise. He quickly makes his way back down the hall, easily finding the stairwell, passing by the elevators and slipping inside. He'll wait for her to keep up with him, cracking open the door to the next floor.
He can see it's far more active up here, but he has complete confidence they'll cut them all down before it becomes a problem.]
Let's move through them before they even know what's happening. Got that sword ready?
no subject
What, have you done this before?
[ kidnap people, use them as bait for those his dad has put a hit on or whatever—it would make sense since he seems to know how to plan these things out and anticipate what might happen next. lumine wipes her hands on her skirt, staining the fabric with blood from the railing earlier. hopefully, those two guys would be able to leave without issues—or at least, find a safe place to hide.
she tries to remember the things zhongli told her about the traveler in terms of her powers, feeling inadequate enough compared to her. then again, that's why she's not that lumine, deciding that there's no need for her to completely annihilate their enemy. she simply wants to save her employees.
she summons a sword made of ice, wondering if it would've been easier if she kept the gun. it probably would have. she closes her eyes, making peace with herself. ]
Let's do this.
no subject
He can tell she's made peace with what she needs to do now, and a part of him is excited to see her skills in a fight- and another part of him wishes she didn't have to do this, live this life of what duties he would have as part of a crime syndicate and fighting gods. It's easy to see how much he's already merged with Childe, and he sighs as he pushes that thought out of his head, steadying his voice, confident and dead serious.]
Alright. Left side of the hallway is yours, I'll take the right. Let's go.
[Much like before, he opens the door quickly and dashes out, the first man in the hallway falling to his blade, a silent kill dealt before he can even scream. Ajax keeps moving down the hallway, one man shouting "Volkov!" before he runs him through, but that alone isn't good.]
Let's find them quickly!
[It's only a matter of time now, he's sure someone's made a phone call the minute he heard that guy yell.]
no subject
it's not a merge per se, because she can still feel her counterpart fighting against her, but more of lumine proverbially shoving her hand into a box that she shares with the traveler and pulling out something she can use.
she says nothing in response to ajax's instructions, simply moving instinctively the moment he opens the door. her arm swings independently of her own accord, cutting the first person in her lane that she sees. her free hand waves at the same time, slamming another man against the wall and rendering him unconscious. she only pauses when she hears ajax's name being called out, whipping her blade to the side to clean the blood off of it. ]
You couldn't take care of that one before it squealed?
[ in any case, she follows after him down the hallway, glancing around to see if they've missed anything. ]
no subject
But he's still moving quickly down the hall regardless, throwing open doors to empty rooms, until finally they reach one down toward the end. It's no surprise to him, why wouldn't they go the maximum distance to find the last of the hostages. The door gets thrown open, and his eyes widen at the sight.
They were too late.
The two men in question lay dead on the floor in the back, looking as if they were tortured to death. For what reason would they do that? That hasn't been his previous experience with the Dufonts at all, not by a long shot.
But that moment that he's distracted by the dead bodies ends up being the slip up they'd been waiting for, a deep evil croak of a laugh resounding from behind the door that's been opened into the room. A split second later, a hand is thrust right through the wood, splinters flying as it grabs the mafia lord right around his neck and lifts him. A choked cry comes out of Ajax, grabbing a hold of the arm to no avail. The door cracks under the pressure said arm going up through it, but whoever is on the other side doesn't seem to mind.
Got you.
He can feel himself getting flung through the air, slamming against the back wall, wind completely knocked out of him as he lands with a thud near the bodies.
Stay still for me, this won't take long.
The man that begins to walk towards Ajax doesn't look normal, bare arms glowing a sickly blue that feels unnatural, and he can feel the malice behind it. His eyes flick downward to the bodies, their faces contorted into a look of horror, and he looks back at the god that now looms over him.]
no subject
Ajax!
[ her yell quickly catches the attention of the god and it stops its advance on ajax, however, head turning towards her. the impassive expression that's once settled on its face suddenly lights up, its lips pulling to a very manic grin. lumine feels something cold run down her spine, colder than the sword in her hand.
there you are, little star. we've been looking everywhere for you.
she takes a defensive stance, blade held in between the both of them. but then, the god doesn't take a step towards her. instead, it turns back to ajax, his eyes flashing.
but you'll have to wait a little longer. ]
Wait—
no subject
The god turns sideways, just to make sure Lumine has a good view of Ajax, glancing over to her with a grin on his face.
Say goodbye to him.
His hand comes up, and he thrusts it right into Ajax's chest, that same blue enveloping the hole that seems to open up at the god's command. Slowly, a white ghastly form seems to be withdrawn from his chest as the other grips a hold of something and pulls it out, Ajax's screams echoing in the room as the god makes sure it's as painful as possible. The form is something familiar, the likeness of Childe emerging from Ajax's body, eyes closed as the god pulls him out completely.
It's then that Ajax stops screaming, his eyes losing any traces of life that they once had, his body going limp. The god simply tosses his body towards Lumine, and Ajax rolls a few times before coming to land on his side, body crumpled with no signs of life.
The soul that's emerged seems to wake, and looks over to Lumine, seeing the dead body on the floor, but doesn't seem to be able to move.]
Lumine...hel- AHHHHHHHHH!
[The god laughs, the blue aura of his arms enveloping Childe, sending a power through him that continues the torture he means to put upon him and, in turn, Lumine.
What's this? Two consciousnesses inside of one soul, how perfect. I'll keep you both as pets and torture you for eternity!]
no subject
he's heavier than her, however, and she finds herself crashing onto the floor with his unmoving body, her arms wrapped around him. ]
Ajax! Ajax!
[ she can feel a build-up of emotions inside of her, her chest squeezing tightly and blood pounding in her ears. his skin is starting to get cold against her touch, the expression on his face slack and blank. lifeless. dead.
when lumine finally looks up once more, her eyes widen at the sight of another of ajax's forms screaming in pain. no, that's not just ajax, is it? she squeezes her eyes shut when she feels a sharp pain lance through her head, more screams filling her ears.
except it's not childe's voice that she hears, but— ]
What did you do to him? [ her eyes seem to flash brightly, more gold than amber. ] My brother and I should've finished you when we had the chance.
no subject
And now you'll regret it, little star. I'd love to sit here and torture the Harbinger for a while longer, but I've got you to deal with. Don't worry, I've got a home prepared for him...well, them, isn't it? How foolish, now they'll both suffer. As for that thing, don't fret- he's already dead.
Childe stares at the crystal focus, his eyes widening, fear filling him. If he goes in there, he's probably not coming back out. Though, he recognizes the change in Lumine, and he knows his comrade has come out in this crucial moment. He laughs, his voice strained, trying to distract the god from doing the deed so Lumine has a good shot at him.]
Oh, you're in trouble now. It's like the old Snezhnayan saying goes, "The lady bears a crust of rage as the ground bears hardened frost in the morning. Some days, it melts with warm persuasion, but on others, it lingers, and all is hollow ere its cold fury."
Don't say I didn't warn- Ngghhhhhhaaaaahhhhh!!!!
[The god lances more power through the spirit, gripping the ghostly neck of the Harbinger even tighter as he loses his temper with Childe's sassy mouth, his attention momentarily moved to silence him.]
