Character Name: Yosuke Hanamura
Character Canon: Persona 4

History: Yosuke on the Megami Tensei wiki!

AU History:

Yosuke was born as an only child, his mother a warrior of the Valkyries and his father being the owner of a large market that tried to fill the needs of the people in any way possible. It grew to be a little more popular than some of the other markets in the tree, and garnered some negative attention from some of the other residents. But all in all Yosuke's childhood life was pretty good- he helped his dad out with the business, had his own fun around Citadel when he wasn't working, learning the basic script to be able to read and write to help fill orders and support the family while his mother was out on business. However, Yosuke is smaller in build for a Valkyrie, lean and not quite as muscular as the rest. He is still a strong kid, but he doesn't do intensive labor like some of the others do in Citadel since the business they run leans more on the shop side rather than something like carpentry. He catches some flack for that, and isn't as popular with kids his age due to the family business, being a little awkward, and just being a smaller guy in general.

And then there's the conflict of Gigas. He'd heard about their siege on Caldera, and what if they want to come to Citadel next? There's something that burns inside of him when he thinks about it. He's not sure how he can help, but he's always had this nagging feeling that he might actually be a little different from everyone else. Usually he blows it off and tells himself he's being dumb and that he's not really anything special. He did find himself a pair of weapons, two larger-sized kunai that he thought would make him look completely badass just in case he ever had to use them if something did threaten Citadel and he did end up having to fight. He's certain the women could handle it, but better safe than sorry.

Plus, he's not so sure if this is what he wants with his life. Being pushed into a pigeonhole of having to fill this particular role in society really sucks, and is really boring. He'd like to get out and see the world, and with Union helping Citadel in their time of need against the giant fire pokémon that attacked, it gave him a sight that there's more out there to see. A new exciting world to explore. The idea of leaving Citadel freaks him out a little bit, but there's another sense of excitement that pushes him to want to leave the tree. He'll get his wish, but it comes in the form of something he's not so excited about- his dad wants to go to Union to open a branch of their store since it's so popular. And with meat being rarer in Union, he to open up a meat market there (which his father will want to expand on slowly.) So, he's dragging his teenage son along for the ride, leaving their store back in Citadel under the supervision of the assistant for the time being until his dad feels it's okay to leave the store to Yosuke.

Canon Personality:

You could say Yosuke is the bumbling best friend, the sidekick, the guy that's not in the spotlight that's being noticed but the one right behind who you can make out if you look hard enough. It might take a face full of trashcan to do it, but you'll eventually notice him. Despite that, Yosuke is his own person, the city boy who's stuck out in the sticks, the Hero from Junes, and he's here to stay.

At first glance, Yosuke's a pretty happy, clumsy, easy going guy. He likes the ladies and can be kind of a pervert sometimes. Wearing a grin, he keeps up a happy-go-lucky demeanor and tries to act cool, though ends up in him being awkward around other people. It's hard for him to command respect, as he's not taken seriously by his peers or blown off as some kind of loser, which hurts him more than he lets on. His friends are important to him and he's quite loyal to them. He's often seen trying to lift their spirits when they're down, wanting to keep the atmosphere positive. Sometimes though, this may come at the expense of one of his friends, enjoying to poke a little fun at them every once in a while. Unfortunately, he'll often speak before he thinks, putting his foot in his mouth. He will realize when he's taken it too far, and apologize for it. Yosuke is a bit of a pushover, giving into the commands of his fellow coworkers and Chie's demands (even if he owes her anyway.) On occasion however, you can find Yosuke dolling out some cash to treat one of his friends to lunch, but only with what's within his wallet. He can prove to be a little generous, to even go as far as giving Teddie a roof over his head.

But needless to say, this is all really a pain in his ass sometimes. He doesn't mind helping out, but he sure doesn't mind complaining about it. Especially if it freaks him out. Easily flustered, it's easy to get him to react in almost any sort of fashion. A good way to do it is to trigger his homophobia, which will really get him going. It's not all that hard to make him mad either, not that his temper is bad, but he will anger when someone does something that inconveniences him. Depending on the severity, he'll either brush it off and deal or he'll yell at them, often showing his displeasure with Chie for example when she spends his money or forces him to do something that he doesn't want to do. Despite all this, it's very hard for Yosuke to actually hate someone. They've got to cross a very defined, distinct line with him in order for him to hate them.

That being said, Yosuke has a strong sense of justice. People who enjoying hurting others or killing makes him more angry than most things. And he won't let that fly if he can help it. In times of need, and despite his happy demeanor, he can be very serious. His determination really shines through here, refusing to back down or give up even in dangerous situations. He'll even cheer his friends on to keep them going too. He has good organizational skills, helping to keep the Investigation Team on track, and shows a decent amount of intelligence and insight into situations, despite not being great in school. This even applies to his relationships, being able to tell when Yu needed someone there for him during a really hard time and returning to stand with his friend for support.

Nothing is always as it seems however, and there's always a darker side to everyone, including Yosuke. He fears being alone, and surrounds himself with people to try to shut it out. He's become a target of hate from the residents of Inaba because of Junes, the department store that his father manages. That cheery personality he has is really a facade, trying to blow off and hide his problems with a smile. But in reality, he's really resentful of a lot of the people around him, and envious of others who seem to be better off than him. This has earned him the title of Captain Ressentiment, which is a title he does not appreciate at all. He wants to feel important, be a hero, or anything that makes him feel like he isn't useless. Sometimes, he feels like he's the pain in the ass, feeding into the feeling that he's alone. It devastates him that his crush Saki Konishi didn't really like him at all, and only acted nice to him because he was the son of the manager where she worked. He also gets bored very easily, being out in the boonies and being accustomed to the city life, and uses that to try to find excitement. Unfortunately it manifested in the form of Saki's death, and even though he did care for her quite a bit and wished to find her killer with the best intentions, it was an opportunity for him to spice up his life as well, and maybe come out of it as a hero. He works out these insecurities with the protagonist of the game, eventually leading him to accept who he is completely and to make decisions on how to change himself to be a better person, and live life with the realization that every single day is important.

All in all, Yosuke is a good friend, and a good person overall despite his flaws. Loyal, caring, and even a little spazzy, he'll try to make any time spent together fun, and come through for you when you need him to.

AU Deviation:

Not much changes from canon to here, except Yosuke is notably going to be much stronger than his canon incarnation due to his upbringing in the Valkyrie society vs. in Tokyo/Inaba. He also doesn't have a personal fight with anyone or anything because he doesn't lose someone close to him like when he loses Saki in Persona 4. That's being replaced in a general sense with Gigas's presence.

Canon Abilities:

Yosuke himself does not possess special abilities other than the ability to summon a Persona. It comes in three forms, as Jiraiya, Susano-o, and Takehaya Susano-o. From the canon point I've chosen, his persona will take the form of Susano-o. This persona has wind and healing abilities at Yosuke's disposal, as well as other enhancing spells.

Wind Spells: These are the basic damaging abilities, being able to target just one or multiple targets at once with wind. Passive spells include the ability to amp up these spells, making them more powerful. He can also nullify an enemy's resistance to wind attacks. Damaging spells come in different intensities- some do a small amount of damage whereas others do a significant amount, depending on how much power he needs/wants to use.

Healing Spells: Not as potent as some of the other personas, Yosuke's can only heal a moderate amount of damage.

Enhancing Spells/Support Spells: This persona comes equipped with the ability to nullify an enemy's stats that are increased by a special ability of the foe, increase the agility of Yosuke or his allies, or attempt to Confuse the target(s).

Physical Abilities: Yosuke's persona can also attack the enemy itself. Its physical form is quite large, and is capable of taking on large hefty enemies. It's been smashed up against walls from foes with impressive strength, but it can't take several of these hits in a row before dissipating.

Yosuke himself dual-wields kunai in battle. He however, is not well versed in hand-to-hand combat, and is still learning.

Enlightened Abilities:

Yosuke's Enlightened types will be Flying and Normal. His trainer ability will be Child of the Howling Gale.

He's going to start out at Level 5 as a Normal type only and work his way up from there. However, he's not even going to know he has any types or even know he's an Enlightened to start. He'll come into his abilities as he goes along, and they'll exhibit themselves as he grows closer to his CR, and learns and develops himself. However, his discoveries of his abilities will coincide with evolution levels, the first no earlier than Level 30 and the second no earlier than Level 55.

Initially, he'll only be able to do things that would be considered normal for someone who was not an Enlightened, moves like Take Down, Retaliate, Rage, etc. He'll have his weapons (dual kunai) so moves like Cut, Slash and Chip Away will be available for him. These moves aren't going to be as effective as they normally are to start either, due to his lack of experience in fighting. If he bothers to train and practice at it, they will become stronger and eventually reach their full potential in time. He doesn't know that he's not exactly a normal human though, and will accidentally be mucking things up when he uses moves like Teeter Dance and Supersonic without knowing what's actually going on or that he's using them at all.

The next thing he'll discover is his trainer ability. He won't understand what's happened to him, confused as to why when he actually tries that he can move so swiftly when he was such a clumsy guy before. This will open up some other abilities for him to learn, like Double Team, Quick Attack and Extreme Speed. What will start to make him think even harder (if this doesn't do it already) is when he learns Air Cutter, something he shouldn't know but fits in with what he's already capable of.

Once he's found himself and figured out a lot about himself (not all, but a lot) he'll receive his last evolution and gain his flying type. Due to his normal typing, he won't change much other than sprout a pair of wings. All his flying type moves will start to come into play now- Aerial Ace, Fly, Brave Bird, Gust, just to name a few. Additionally, he'll get his healing abilities from here, learning Roost. He'll also gain his status changing abilities now, like Defog and Feather Dance.

The point of his abilities being learned like this is to coincide how social links work in the game, as Yosuke gains perks and abilities as his relationship with the protag grows. It also pertains specifically to how his own social link ends up- him realizing himself and finding out that by just being himself, he becomes special, like he wanted in the first place.

Starter Pokémon: Bidoof. The most linefaced Bidoof in existence.

Notes/Special Considerations: None, I think!

SAMPLES

First-Person:

Sample 1 from another game and Top Level on the Test Drive which is still ongoing.

Third-Person:

The journey had been long and arduous, leaving Citadel with his father for Union. It was only a temporary trip for his dad, but for Yosuke it was most likely to become permanent, something he did not find exciting at all. He'd been asked to help and it wasn't like he could say no. Yosuke had been looking forward to the trip itself at least- he'd get to get outside of Citadel, and see everything on the way that he wouldn't normally of seen otherwise. The Plains had been nothing special of course, but heading into Verdant Forest was something else. It was so green, filled with all different kinds of pokémon he hadn't seen before. All different kinds of vegetation grew here, and while he kept an eye out just in case, it was awesome to get out and see this. The swamp they'd passed on the way might of been interesting too, but he's a little glad they hadn't gone that way and bypassed it. It looks kinda freaky in there.

Thankfully, they didn't run into any trouble on their journey so far, and it was that time again to stop and rest. Waving to his father, he set out to check out stuff up close, nearly tripping over uprooted roots of trees every now and again. He's gotten far enough away where he's no longer in earshot of his father, but hasn't strayed too far when he hears rustling fifty feet off. Like something had gotten into a fight. A screech is heard here and there, and his ears perk up as he darts in the direction of the scuffle. Rounding a tree, he finally catches a glimpse of what's going on- a Scyther picking a fight with a Bidoof. It's very clear that the Scyther has the complete advantage, and it seems to just be toying with the Bidoof who's trying to protect itself. He feels anger boil up inside of him, and the next thing he knows he's shouting at the Scyther.

"Hey, why don't you pick on someone your own size!"

Immediately, fear replaces that anger. He just opened his mouth when he shouldn't of, and the bug type turns and gives him a sly look that could only mean one thing. Yosuke is in trouble now, and he starts to panic.

"Oh crap! Can't we talk this out-?!" Yelping, he turns and starts to run in the opposite direction, as fast as he can muster to get back to his dad. He'd left his blades there too, completely defenseless as the Scyther easily gains on him. Forgetting about the previous roots he'd tripped over before, Yosuke finds himself faceplanting right into the dirt as a foot catches one again and he slams into the ground. He scrambles to get to his feet, but turning behind him reveals the bug type looming over him, a scythe lifted high into the air. He's a goner, he hadn't even gotten to live all that long, only to die out in the middle of nowhere. Someone tell his parents that he loves them for him, because this isn't even fair. Why'd he have to go and open his big mouth anyway?

His eyes close as he waits for the final blow. A blow that never comes, replaced instead with a loud thump and a crash of something slamming into the ground. Eyes open, and he sees that the Scyther that was to end his life isn't standing in front of him anymore. It lies on the ground, its arm seemingly broken with a snarling Bidoof standing between it and the boy. Angered that it had been caught off guard and injured, the Scyther picks itself up and moves swiftly, knowing that it was time to run and fight another day. Surprise unfolds on Yosuke's features, the Bidoof waddling over and checking up on him. He sits up, doing the same for the pokémon that had just saved his life, noting cuts and abrasions on the Bidoof. It wasn't in good shape either, and it had followed to help him.

"Thanks," he replies shakily, "I was totally a goner if you hadn't showed up." The Bidoof squeaks back happily, struggling to stand. Yosuke scoops the pokémon up, knowing that he can't just leave it out here. That Scyther might have friends to come back looking for it. And he sort of owes it one. It might be a pain in the ass to take care of it now when they still weren't to Union yet, but surely the city would have some kind of medical treatment. They had bandages with them, but it looks beat up enough that he'd really like to get it to someone to look at it.

"Man, you need to go on a diet!" He says jokingly, with protest from the pokémon. "Hahaha, come on, it was just a joke. We'll take you to Union with us, so we can get you fixed up alright?" Carrying his newfound friend back to his father, they finish their journey in a day's time and finally arrive in Union as a newly formed trio.
